The day moves along slowly, as all days do here in Graydon. Sword practice, running laps around the hill, studies, and more training. The usual strain of boredom suffocates me but then drifts away, leaving me grasping for reality. The normal feelings I think I should be feeling now linger just beyond a haze that cloud my thoughts.

I enter the Archives to finish my trades for the day with Mother. She is nowhere in the lobby which means she’ll be behind the closed doors sorting documents. I push the heavy door open and find her among the shelves like I thought.

“Quintin,” She gasps and runs to me.

I don’t resist when she throws her arms around me but can’t put together the reason for her odd behavior or the tears that follow.

“Hello, Mother…?”

“Oh, Quintin!” Mother holds me out and searches my face and body with her eyes, “I didn’t think I would get the chance to see you again! I have been so worried! Having to report you was the hardest…”

She begins crying and hugs me again. Commander’s face interrupts my vision. I blink while listening to Mother ramble about something that happened this morning as if I was there.

“… oh why did you have to go into the trees?! Why would you -of all people-choose to break the rules?” Mother pauses and looks at my confused expression then her face drains of color.

She quickly straightens, and then clears her throat. I try to make sense of her words, my distant feelings, and her strange behavior now.

The same image of the tree from earlier overtakes my mind, and an electrifying power awakens my body, shattering the haze of confusion. I know what Mother is talking about. Commander said I wouldn’t remember anything, but now I do... Did he plan this?

I look at my hands, around the room, then back to Mother who is nibbling at her fingernail-a tick she does only whenever she’s trying to hide something.

“You’re acting strange, Mother. You ok?” I ask.

“Oh, just getting all sappy about you growing up is all.” She forces a laugh.

I frown, “No. You were talking of reporting me.”

“Quintin, I think you’re hearing things… Why would we ever report you?” Mother shifts her eyes around the room and nervously smiles.

“Mother, you did report me. You were there this morning… when Father took me to see Commander. I can’t understand why you feel the need to deny it now after admitting it only seconds ago.”

Mother’s jaw drops while taking a step back. Then I hear her whisper.

“You remember?!”

“Shouldn’t I?” My nerves begin to stir.

I watch for any clue that Mother might run to report me like Father had. My fists clench from the memory… Father. He was the man I once wanted to become; now I can’t even look at him. My heart can’t take another of my parents to betray me. I slowly slide my body to block Mother from the door. She doesn’t notice and takes a step closer. She still speaks in a whisper.
